EAP & EAL explained

Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP) incorporates horses experientially for emotional growth and learning. It is a collaborative effort between the Mental Health Professional (MHP) and an Equine Specialist (ES) working with the clients and the horses to achieve treatment goals.

This aims to assist clients to process and manage issues impacting on their life – related to mental health and well being. Because of its intensity and effectiveness, it is considered a short-term, or “brief” approach.

Equine Assisted Learning (EAL) is essentially the same as the above – but the focus is more on learning and developing skills in an experiential way.

EAL widens it’s reach into a variety of areas such as school programs, bullying programs, business and corporate work, leadership development, working with special populations like children with Autism or ADD / ADHD, teaching social skills and character development, team building, building and maintaining relationships, parenting programs, boundary setting and more!

Both EAP & EAL are experiential in nature. This means that participants learn about themselves, others and their environment by taking part in activities with the horses, and then having the opportunity to process (or talk about) feelings, behaviours and patterns which they (or the therapeutic team) may have noticed within the session.

Other experiential forms of therapy you may know about are ropes courses or adventure/wilderness therapy, which are used by therapists, treatment facilities, and human development services around the world.

Both EAP & EAL sessions can be quite personal and intense due to the power of the modality.

EAP & EAL are considered solution focussed, brief therapy due to the effectiveness of the treatment. This style of treatment can lessen the number of sessions a client may need to be engaged, because it is solution focussed and effective in its ability to get right to the “issues”.

Who is this for?
